Clean water looks the same whether it is safe or dangerous — and in Bangladesh, that is exactly the problem. Bangladesh Has a Double Water Problem
Two separate dangers hide in the country’s water. The first is arsenic in deep groundwater — the water most families pump from tube wells. The second is microbial contamination (bacteria, viruses and parasites) in ponds, rivers and shallow or poorly-sited wells, which causes diarrhoeal disease. Solving one can worsen the other: decades ago, health campaigns pushed people from germ-laden surface water to tube wells to stop diarrhoea — and unknowingly exposed tens of millions to arsenic. Arsenic: The Silent, Slow Poison
The World Health Organization has called the arsenic contamination of Bangladesh’s groundwater the largest mass poisoning of a population in history. Estimates of how many people drink water above the WHO safety limit range from around 20 million to over 50 million, and 59 of the country’s 64 districts have arsenic above the national limit. Crucially, WHO’s guideline is 10 micrograms per litre, while Bangladesh’s national standard is a weaker 50 µg/L — so water passed as “safe” locally may still exceed the international limit.
Arsenic causes no taste, smell or immediate illness, which is what makes it so dangerous. Harm builds up over years of drinking contaminated water. Long-term exposure is a recognised cause of skin, lung and bladder cancers, skin disease, and cardiovascular problems, and one study links roughly 43,000 deaths a year in Bangladesh to arsenic-related illness.
Early warning signs of arsenic exposure
The first visible signs (called arsenicosis) usually appear on the skin: dark spots (melanosis) on the chest, back or limbs, and hard, thickened patches (keratosis) on the palms and soles. If you or neighbours drinking from the same tube well notice these, treat it seriously and get the water tested and a doctor’s opinion.
Waterborne Germs: The Fast Threat
Where arsenic is slow, microbial contamination strikes fast. Faecally-contaminated water — from ponds, rivers, floods, or wells too close to latrines — spreads:
- Diarrhoeal disease, including cholera, the biggest killer of young children through dehydration.
- Typhoid fever and dysentery (bacterial infections causing fever and gut illness).
- Hepatitis A and E (viral liver infections), a particular risk in pregnancy.
- Parasites such as Giardia, causing prolonged diarrhoea.

Is Your Water Safe? How to Find Out
You cannot tell by looking, tasting or smelling. The only way to know your tube well’s arsenic level is to test it. Under national programmes, many wells have been tested and painted green (safe) or red (unsafe) — but millions remain untested, and a well’s depth alone does not guarantee safety. Contact your local Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) office or upazila health complex about testing. For microbial safety, assume any surface water or shallow, poorly-protected well is unsafe unless treated.
How to Get Safe Drinking Water at Home
The right method depends on which threat you face — and this is where most people go wrong, because the fix for germs does not fix arsenic.
- Use a tested, safe source first. A green-marked or deep tube well, or a piped municipal supply, is the best starting point.
- Boil to kill germs. Bringing water to a rolling boil for about a minute kills bacteria, viruses and parasites. Important: boiling does NOT remove arsenic — in fact it slightly concentrates it as water evaporates.
- Match the filter to the threat. Cloth, ceramic and candle filters remove sediment and many germs but do not remove arsenic. Removing arsenic needs a dedicated arsenic-removal filter (such as activated-alumina or Sono-type units) or reverse-osmosis (RO).
- Consider safer alternatives in high-arsenic areas: harvested rainwater, protected dug wells, or pond-sand filters — combined with disinfection for germs.
- Store water safely. Keep treated water in a clean, covered container and pour or use a ladle rather than dipping hands or cups in, which re-contaminates it.
Protecting Children and Pregnant Women
The youngest and pregnant women are most vulnerable to both threats — arsenic can affect children’s development, and dehydration from diarrhoea is life-threatening for infants. Safe Water on a Budget
Safe water does not have to be expensive. Depending on your situation and the local threat, here are practical options roughly from cheapest to costliest:
- Boiling (near-free): just the cost of gas — the cheapest reliable way to kill germs. Remember it does nothing for arsenic.
- Ceramic or candle filter (a few hundred to ~2,000 taka): good against sediment and germs for everyday use; not for arsenic.
- Piped WASA/municipal supply: treated at source, but store and, where needed, boil it — quality can drop in old pipes and during supply gaps.
- Arsenic-removal filter or RO unit (several thousand taka and up): the real solution where arsenic is confirmed. Reserve the bigger spend for households in red-zone areas.
The smartest move is to match your spending to your actual risk: get the water tested first, then pay only for what that result calls for. There is no point buying an expensive RO unit if your tube well is arsenic-free and a simple boil would do — and no point relying on a cheap candle filter if you sit in a high-arsenic district.

Does boiling water remove arsenic?
No. Boiling kills germs but does nothing to arsenic — and because some water evaporates, it can slightly raise the arsenic concentration. For arsenic you need a proper arsenic-removal filter or reverse osmosis.
